investigation into this biographer paula broadwell. what can you tell us about this at this point? >> the fbi has opened up an investigation to determine whether paula broadwell had access to general petraeus' e-mail. general petraeus is not under investigation and they don't expect their inquiry will result in criminal charges. now, we have reached out to paula broadwell. we haven't heard back from her yet. she is, of course, at the center of this scandal. so who is she? she is a harvard graduate, also went to west point and she wrote this biography that i have here in my hands. it's called "all in," the education of general petraeus. it's a thick book but i want to read a lig sellment. she says, his critics fault him for ambition. i will note that he is driven and goal-orient d. so just one sentence in a very thick book that is now of course coming under a lot of scrutiny. to give you a sense of how this all came to light, we're told that the white house learned about this situation with general petraeus on wednesday, which was, of course, the day after the election. general petraeus had a

into these emails that were described as harassing emails that were sent from paula broadwell to another woman. he learned about them on election day, on tuesday. on wednesday, he notified the white house. on thursday morning, the national security adviser, tom donovan, made the president aware, general petraeus was here, the former general, retired general, was here on thursday where he offered his resignation. the president slept on it overnight. called him back on friday and accepted the resignation. as far as the individual who rereceived the allegedly harassing emails from paula broadwell, our nbc's pete williams, our justice correspondent is reporting this afternoon, she was a civilian employee of the defense department contractor, not someone in the government or military. now about the benghazi angle of all this. of course david petraeus, as head of the c.i.a. was due to testify late next week, thursday, before the house and senate intelligence committees about what happened on september 11th. the events leading up to it. any warning signs that were missed and what happened in that controv

petraeus and paula broadwell were in fact indicative of an extramarital affair. broadwell the biographer who had writer a book. joining me john harwood, chief washington correspondent for cnbc. good to see you. >> hey, craig. >> what do we know at this point about the fbi investigation? >> well, not all that much. but what we do know is that the investigation began into e-mails that paula broadwell was sending to another woman. so it started away from petraeus, and then led to petraeus because of the nature of his exchanges with paula broadwell. don't know whether that fbi investigation is going to produce a prosecution or anything further. but that's how it appears to have started. it doesn't appear that this has anything to do with other extraneous issues that people have talked about, benghazi or any big geopolitical thing. it seems to be extremely personal. >> what has been the reaction from the white house? and what are you hearing from people on the hill? >> well, i think everybody is disappointed. you know, dianne feinstein, veteran democrat from california just reelected herself

, general allen, jill kelley, paula broadwell, we are a war-weary nation but these men have overseen our troops, allen seeing 68,000 of our troops. there is a tipping point here where people are going to get angry to know what the back story is. >> i think so. i think ruth is also partly right when she says there's a sex scandal salaciousness that makes it appealing to the public and media but at the same time there are bigger issues. i think the fiscal cliff is an important issue that should come up at the press conference. this issue with benghazi, overly politicized by republicans during the campaign, now we can finally get real hard answers and talk about appointments. susan rice is an excellent candidate to be secretary of state and i think that john mccain came out just today and said he was opposed to her nomination. i don't think that's a fair statement because susan rice was simply following the advice from general petraeus who john mccain says was a hero so there's a great deal of inconsistency in the republican messaging that needs to be answered. >> mccain's biggest obstacle
